Mirabella V - The Largest Single Masted Yacht In The World
The largest single masted yacht in the world became a reality in May 2004. Mirabella V was launched in November of 2003 and her mast was stepped six weeks later. She proceeded to the Mediterranean in June and completed five weeks charter in her first season.
This revolutionary composite super yacht presented unique challenges to the leading designers and engineers involved in her creation.
Performance was a key demand of this pioneering vessel, with special emphasis on windward capability, and her brief had called for a speed exceeding 20 knots under sail.
Mirabella V was designed by Irish-based, New Zealand-born yacht-designer Ron Holland. Technical aspects of the composite construction of hull and rig were supervised by the Hamble-based firm High Modulus Europe Ltd, a subsidiary of a New Zealand company.
This ground breaking yacht incorporates every facility for the luxury corporate and private charter market.
Mirabella V is available for charter Summers in the Mediterranean, and Winters in the Caribbean.
At rates of $250,000 a week for the boat and crew - provisions are extra - customers are the rich or famous, from royalty to movie directors. And to make work manageable for the crew, the 740-ton sailing yacht has an express elevator that runs from the deck two-thirds of the way to the top of the 290-foot mast.
"This is a commercial charter vessel. And it's fully booked for next summer," said Joseph Vittoria, the former CEO of both Hertz and Avis. He commissioned the $50 million superyacht to complete a boyhood dream.
Luciana Vittoria’s extensive experience in the sailing yacht charter market had a big influence on the design of deck and interior arrangements. Private and public multi-function areas were given equal priority so as to allow for a wide variety of lifestyle requirement for the owners’ party or 12 charter guests. The overall practical interior design detailing and soft furnishings have been enhanced with traditional joinery and antique furniture elements.
High quality materials, hardware and interior workmanship from specialist companies ensured Mirabella V’s accommodation areas are to world class standards. The result is a spectacularly spacious yet intimate environment for both the owners’ party and the select number of charter guests who will be fortunate enough to experience life aboard this, the largest sailing yacht of her type afloat.
During the early stages of designing Mirabella V, a carefully selected number of material and equipment suppliers were invited to be involved with this ground breaking project so as to ensure the highest possible standards were achieved in every area of specification, design and construction.
Due to the uniqueness of this pioneering project, many area of the yacht were necessarily custom and relied heavily on the creative design and manufacturing capabilities of the chosen companies.
Guinness has given world-record status to the Mirabella V's length, mast height and sail size. The Jacuzzi holds 20 soakers, there's a wine cellar, a 21-foot swimming pool and spa, a gym and plasma televisions linked to a central computer - even a movie on a large projection screen under the stars. There's a 30-foot tender and watersports toys from lasers to jet skis, ski boats and kayaks.
The captain, Robert "Johno" Johnston of Sydney, Australia, and his crew of 13 brought Mirabella V from England to the seaport because neither the Town Docks nor other local marinas can accommodate it. The yacht draws 13 feet with the keel up and 33 feet when it's down.
The yacht sleeps 12 guests in six cabins, "and that's the maximum because over that and you're technically a cruise ship." To qualify for that regulation, Mirabella V would have to carry a covered lifeboat, which would spoil its silhouette, Joseph Vittoria said.
The six guest cabins with matching guest robes were named by Luciana Vittoria for their palettes: Topaz, Tiger Eye, Sapphire, Aquamarine, Lapiz and Turquoise. She appointed the yacht with Oriental rugs and a blend of period pieces and contemporary furniture and accessories, from Christofle water pitchers to a 1920s desk, antique mirrors, photos from White Cube in London, and lacquered wood from Italy.
