Etoile d'Azur - The New Moonen 84 Presented At The Fort Lauderdale Show 2007
Moonen Shipyards-builders of a full line of Displacement, Semi-displacement, and Explorer yachts between 72 and 124 feet-has delivered the seventh in its remarkable Moonen 84 Series. Designed by René van der Velden with naval architecture by Stolk Marimecs, the Moonen 84 Series was introduced in 2002 with the launch of Mimi and has since become the shipyard's most successful semi-custom series in 25 years, with the eighth yacht to be delivered in 2008.

The new Moonen 84, Etoile d'Azur, was built for a client in retirement seeking to replace a 68-foot Riva with a Moonen-quality displacement yacht of more stately speed and much greater comfort and range. (Still, as an enthusiast for Formula 1 Racing and the occasional Ferrari, he is maintaining his connection to speed by mounting a super-fast water scooter on the flying bridge.)

The owner was undoubtedly attracted to the Moonen 84's classic lines, but was already quite familiar with the quality of the full Moonen line as a member of the Monaco Yacht Club, where more than one Moonen is moored. He signed a contract in December 2005, and took delivery in early March 2007 after the successful completion of sea trials.

As is Moonen's practice, the steel hull and aluminium superstructure were subcontracted, in this case to Eltink (Holland) and Wisla (Poland) respectively. Other subcontractors include: Klaver (exterior painting), Bloemen en de Maas (teak decking),Tijssen Elektro (electronics installation), Tijssen Elektro-Zeeland (navcom), and Nieuwburg (insulation). Interior woodwork is by Moonen's in-house joinery department and all stainless steel is by Moonen's new daughter company, Inoferro.

As with the entire series, Etoile is powered by twin Caterpillar engines and has double-bottom tanks for safety. But Etoile d'Azur has two distinguishing characteristics that make her stand out from the Series. First, her interior styling is a variation of that created for all the 84s since the fifth, Sofia, by the talented team at Art-Line. In this case, as her name would indicate, it makes ample use of rich tones of blue including blue-painted woods. Second, Etoile is the first Moonen 84 built originally for MCA Certification in Area Category 2.

Moonen delivered in 2007 also two semi-displacement "94 Alu" yachts and has currently five "pocket-size superyachts in various stages of construction: one semi-displacement "99 Alu," and displacement yachts of 84, 97 (two), and 124 feet.
